Downtown Mall demolition: What about downtown residents?

Published: Monday, Jun. 30, 2014 - 4:06 pm

Re "Mall demolition due in July" (Page A1, June 25): Ryan Lillis has done an excellent job of describing the measures being taken by the Kings to ameliorate the effect of arena demolition and subsequent construction on traffic and downtown businesses. However, nowhere in his story, nor in the required notification to people who live and work within a close distance to the arena, has the potential effect on residents who live nearby been discussed. Contrary to popular opinion, not all the residents of the downtown core are less fortunate and easily ignored. When one factors in the residential buildings within likely noise distance of the site, especially at night, there are likely 2,500 to 3,000 people who will be affected by construction noise. Having work done 17 hours a day and in some cases 24 hours for six days per week will affect residents. Mitigating measures must be considered for them.
