Blight fight: The city of Sacramento has hired eight teens for a yearlong graffiti abatement program. Accompanied by two crew members and a supervisor, the students help remove graffiti from freeway overpasses and public and private property, including utility poles, mailboxes and trash receptacles. Besides $8 per hour, participants gain a sense of community pride, training and communication skills. Read about the program here.
Aerojet to Mars: NASA chief Charles Bolden is scheduled to tour Aerojet today to deliver an update on the space agency’s Orion mission, which is set for a test launch on Dec. 4 - the first step toward landing astronauts on Mars by the late 2020s. The Aerojet facility in Rancho Cordova is making and testing some of the spacecraft’s most crucial components, including the rocket’s abort system and thruster engines for the crew module vehicle. Aerojet has partnered with NASA since the 1960s Mercury missions that first lifted Americans into space. Learn more about Aerojet’s role in space flight here.
Light up the sky: This is the week that Californians can purchase fireworks on a nearby street corner. Sales of “safe and sane” pyrotechnics are allowed during the week leading up to July 4, which is Friday. How much do Americans love their fireworks? Find out how many pounds we’re buying here.
