Truckee officials issue high fire danger warnings for Tuesday

The Truckee Fire Protection District, along with the National Weather Service, has issued a red-flag warning for fires from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Above-normal temperatures, strong winds, thunderstorms and dry humidity can cause fires to explode in size and intensity before first responders can contain them, fire officials said Monday.

Residents and visitors are asked to avoid any outdoor activities that could create a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting or campfires.

Truckee’s fire and police departments stressed that extreme drought conditions exist and no campfires are allowed outside designated campgrounds. All fireworks are illegal in the Truckee/Tahoe area.

“Think twice before starting barbecues or residential warming fires if windy,” officials said in a news release, adding that “all residential warming fires need to be extinguished after use with water until cold to the touch.”
