A Sacramento Superior Court jury today convicted two men of first-degree murder charges in a Jan. 17, 2013, shooting death in the Rosemont area.

The verdicts were returned against Rodolfo Simon Villa, now 23, and Michael John Almeda, 21, in the killing of Alexander Brian Chavez, 21.

Chavez was shot to death in his car on Westporter Driver and Lilibet Avenue after having been chased by the two men in another car, jurors found.

Prosecutors charged that Villa and Almeda are street gang members who gunned down Chavez in a mistaken retaliatory attack. Chavez had nothing to do with an earlier alleged shooting that motivated the fatal assault, according to Deputy District Attorney Donell Slivka.

Villa and Almeda are facing life terms in prison with no chance of parole. Judge Eugene L. Balonon scheduled their sentencing for Aug. 8.
