Placer County agencies increase drunk driving enforcement for July 4 holiday

Published: Wednesday, Jul. 2, 2014 - 5:25 pm

Placer County law enforcement agencies are ramping up their drunk driving enforcement for the coming holiday weekend with an “Avoid the 7” DUI task force.

All seven law enforcement agencies in Placer County will look for swerving vehicles on freeways and county roads from Thursday through Sunday, a press release said.

There will a DUI checkpoint in Auburn from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday and county-wide patrols dedicated to spotting and arresting drunk drivers throughout the weekend.

A DUI arrest can mean jail time, losing your license and penalties averaging at $10,000, the press release said.

Placer County law agencies encouraged people to plan ahead by designating a sober driver before drinking and finding a safe way home before going out to parties.

The police also recommended party-goers to take the keys of any drunk person who is attempting to drive and call 911 if they see a drunk driver.

The Fourth of July weekend ended in 2012 with 78 people killed in drunk-driving crashes, according to the press release.
