Kings reach agreement on three-year deal with Darren Collison

The Kings finally have the point guard they’ve looked to add to the backcourt this offseason.

Darren Collison has agreed to a deal for Sacramento’s full mid-level exception at three years and $16 million.

Collison made $1.9 million last season.

Collison (6-0, 175) averaged 11.4 points and 3.7 assists as Chris Paul’s backup for the Los Angeles Clippers last season. Collison started 35 games last season.

Collison was a first-round draft pick of New Orleans in 2009 out of UCLA and has played for Indiana and Dallas.

The Kings’ starting point guard, Isaiah Thomas, is a restricted free agent. Thomas reportedly already has a three-year, $24 million offer from Detroit. The Kings were looking to pay Thomas closer to $6 million per season.

The Kings would also prefer Thomas come off the bench but Thomas is in line to be paid like a starter.

Thomas averaged career highs of 20.3 points and 6.3 assists last season, but it’s been known the Kings have been looking for a point guard who would improve the team’s passing and perimeter defense.

The team looked to make a deal for a second draft pick to draft Elfrid Payton, but not getting the pick made a point guard priority in free agency.

The Kings could still match any offer sheets for Thomas, possibly bringing him back to compete with Collison or return a sixth-man role. A sign-and-trade is also a possibility.

Collison has started 254 of 376 possible games. He has career averages of 11.9 points and 4.9 assists.
