Re "Vote is breach for Jewish, Presbyterian communities" (Forum, June 29): Not long ago, a friend told me about a former Jewish co-worker who had immigrated to Israel from South Africa. He said he had gone to Israel because he wanted to get away from apartheid. However, in Israel he found that the treatment of Palestinians was not much different from the treatment of blacks in South Africa. He recognized it as the apartheid he was trying to get away from. He then immigrated to the United States.
The Presbyterian Church USA is not anti-Israel, much less anti-Semitic. The Presbyterians are not divesting themselves from all companies that do business with Israel or even Israeli companies. They are divesting from Caterpillar, for example, because it provides bulldozers used in the destruction of Palestinian homes and for clearing land of structures, fruit and olive tree groves in preparation for construction of the barrier wall.
