Re "Progress slow after Prop. 187" (Our Region, July 6): Wow, another hysterical and dishonest rant about Proposition 187 by Marcos Breton. First, Proposition 187 never "became a campaign that profiled an ethnic group," nor did it make intolerance mainstream. These are the vicious lies of a partisan demagogue and slanderer. Of course the impetus for Proposition 187 was Mexican illegal immigration. In 2008, Mexicans made up 61 percent of U.S. illegal immigrants, and 25 percent of all illegal workers resided in California. Breton has the gall to call attempts to mitigate this absurdity racism.
Second, 1994's Proposition 187, which denied taxpayer-funded services to illegal aliens and had no criminal statutes, was not the granddaddy of any Arizona law. Perhaps Breton can explain how a law ruled unconstitutional can be the granddaddy of anything. I truly love Hispanics and Latin culture, but please explain how hordes of low-wage workers will bridge the income gap.
