This Week: Frida Kahlo look-alike contest coming Saturday

Published: Monday, Jul. 7, 2014 - 12:00 am

Frida Kahlo is the rare artist whose own image is so distinctive that it’s become an icon of popular culture – reproduced on T-shirts, jewelry and household goods – perhaps because the self-portrait was one of her favorite genres.

On Saturday, La Raza Galeria Posada will hold what’s being billed as Sacramento’s first Frida Kahlo look-alike contest. The event will last from 1 to 7 p.m. at 2700 Front St. in Sacramento, and will kick off a group exhibit opening that day that pays homage to Kahlo.

The exhibit will feature work by Martha Rodriguez, a self-taught San Francisco artist whose work includes images of Kahlo.

Contestants can come as adult Frida, childhood Frida (Fridita) or as Kahlo and her husband, Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. For more information, go to www.lrgp.org. Each entry costs $20.

The gallery is encouraging contestants to post pictures of themselves in their Frida and Diego getup to Instagram using the tags #sacfrida, #sacramentofrida2014, #sacramentofridita, #sacramentofridadiego2014 and #iglrp.

Rancho Cordova residents can get tax refund help

A workshop to help eligible Rancho Cordova residents apply for tax refunds from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District will be held Tuesday. The community workshop is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Anatolia Clubhouse, 11828 Chrysanthy Blvd. in Rancho Cordova.

A supplemental special tax that helps pay for fire-suppression services in the Sloughhouse/Rancho Murieta area was approved by property owners in 2000, but it was mistakenly levied on 3,841 additional neighboring parcels from tax year 2005-06 to 2012-13. Primarily affected were property owners in Rancho Cordova’s Anatolia neighborhood, according to Metro Fire officials.

During the workshop, sponsored by Assemblyman Ken Cooley, D-Rancho Cordova, property owners can receive assistance in completing and submitting their refund applications.

New AAA gas price survey due Tuesday

Energy analysts expected Sacramento-area and California gas prices to slowly decline with the approach of the Independence Day weekend, but that has not been the case, as a rise in crude oil costs has been driving at-the-pump prices higher in recent weeks. On Tuesday, AAA will release its monthly gas price survey, breaking down at-the-pump costs at locales throughout the state.
