UPDATE: Investigators seek public’s help in search for cause of Monticello fire

Cal Fire investigators are asking the public’s help as they work to determine the cause of the Monticello fire, which as of Tuesday had burned 6,488 acres, primarily in Yolo County.

The fire started shortly after 9:30 p.m. Friday approximately three-quarters of a mile east of the Canyon Creek Resort along Highway 128 in the Lake Berryessa area.

Investigators urge anyone who was in the area of Highway 128 between the Canyon Creek Resort and Pleasants Valley Road between 8 and 10 p.m. Friday to call Cal Fire’s Arson Hotline at (800) 468-4408. Callers providing information or descriptions of individuals or vehicles that were in the area can remain anonymous.

The Monticello fire was reported 55 percent contained Tuesday, which was 10 percent better than the night before. The fire in woodland and grassland was not growing.

Firefighters accomplished full containment on another Northern California fire and reported good progress on a third.

A fire in Nevada County that destroyed an outbuilding and a recreational vehicle, first reported at about 4:30 p.m. Monday at Hutto and Keller roads, was 100 percent contained Tuesday morning, according to Cal Fire.

The fire near Smartsville burned 38 acres.

Nearly contained was the Butts fire, which began July 1, burning in Lake and Napa counties. It was 95 percent contained Tuesday with 4,300 acres burned.
