Former Utah Jazz coach Ty Corbin was at the Kings summer league practice Tuesday morning working with players, even though the team had not announced that he had been added to the teams coaching staff.
Corbin reached an agreement to become coach Michael Malones lead assistant, league sources confirmed Monday night.
Malone remained mum as Corbin chatted with Kings center DeMarcus Cousins on the court.
Im not going to give you a heads up or get into anything specific because theres no official announcement, Malone said. There will be a formal announcement in the next couple of days.
Corbin fills a void left when Brendan Malone resigned before last season. Brendan, Michael Malones father, is now on Stan Van Gundys coaching staff in Detroit.
Michael Malone was looking for an assistant who could challenge him and had experience as a head coach. Corbin was 112-146 in three-plus seasons after replacing Jerry Sloan and led the Jazz to the playoffs in his first full season, 2011-12.
Corbin played forward in the NBA from 1985 to 2001, including two stints with the Kings (1995-96 and 1999-00).
Guest appearance Malone has invited his veterans who arent playing in summer league to join the team for workouts. The first to take him up on the offer was Cousins, who practiced Monday night and was at both practices Tuesday.
(Cousins practicing) just shows his commitment, his willingness to set the tone and establish a relationship with our new player (Nik Stauskas) and continue to work with Ben (McLemore) and Ray (McCallum), Malone said. He is constantly developing as a person, as a player, and I love the direction hes headed in.
Malone said Cousins leadership growth was evident before he arrived in Las Vegas. Cousins took part in a voluntary June minicamp for young players in Sacramento.
Cousins is preparing for Team USA workouts later this month in Las Vegas.
Et cetera Stauskas signed his standard rookie contract with the Kings on Tuesday. As the eighth overall pick, he is slated to earn $2,288,200, but teams are allowed to pay 120 percent of that amount and most do.
• Forward Derrick Williams is expected to join the team this morning. Hes missed the first two days of practice (personal reasons).
