VSP Global, the Rancho Cordova-based vision and eyewear company, will officially unveil its new innovation lab in midtown Sacramento next week.

The 5,000-square-foot facility – which VSP calls “The Shop” – will house VSP’s research and development arm, focused on developing technologies related to eyewear and eye care. It’s located at 1630 I St.

In announcing its innovation lab, VSP cited its recent relationship with Google as a prime example of the kind of vision technologies it hopes to explore. In January, VSP announced a deal with Google to provide prescription lenses and subsidized frames for Google Glass, the wearable computer eyewear.

Known primarily as a provider of vision benefits and services, VSP has grown into a nearly 6,000-employee global company overseeing all aspects of the vision industry: member benefits, vision practice assistance, eyewear, customized lenses, software and ophthalmic technology.
