Keep animals out of the fair

Re "Virus will keep piglets from California State Fair" (July 10): I, for one, am grateful for the PED (porcine epidemic diarrhea) virus that's killing millions of piglets and hope it continues. While not a kind death, I'm sure, it's merciful in sparing these incredibly smart, sentient animals from years of unimaginable pain and suffering on factory farms where many spend their whole lives confined to cages so small they can't even turn around. The fact that PED is also keeping them out of state and county fairs is just another positive.

haven't attended a fair in years because of the animal cruelty issues and would encourage others who care about the humane treatment of animals to likewise withhold their monetary support of such attractions. Animals shouldn't be given away as prizes for winning a ring toss or be gawked at by crowds as they give birth. Have some respect.
