UPDATE: Sheriff’s officials say alleged kidnap attempt at Auburn store was misunderstanding

Placer County sheriff’s officials say a report that a man tried to kidnap a 4-year-old boy Wednesday evening from an Auburn-area Dollar Store appears to have resulted from a misunderstanding.

Detectives have identified and interviewed the man who was involved in the encounter about 5:30 p.m. at the store on Highway 49. The man told detectives that he was walking in the aisle of the store with his hands full when he bumped into the child. As he took the child’s hand and helped him up, the grandmother saw him and misunderstood his actions, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.

The youngster’s grandfather came after the man, who set his items down and left the store, sheriff’s officials said. The man told detectives than he feared for his safety.

At this point, sheriff’s officials said, they have no reason to believe the man had any intention to harm or abduct the child.
