The White Sox announced the signing of first-round draft pick Carlos Rodon on Friday to a minor-league contract with a club-record $6.582 million signing bonus.

Rodon, a left-handed pitcher from North Carolina State, was the No. 3 overall pick in this year's draft. The 6-foot-3, 235-pounder was ranked the No. 3 prospect, and the top college prospect, in the draft by Baseball America.

He will join Class-A Winston-Salem this week to work out and build up arm strength, but will not be on the active roster. He and his family will meet the media at U.S. Cellular Field next Friday, and the Sox will decide afterward with which team he will be activated.

Sox general manager Rick Hahn said Rodon will work primarily out of the bullpen as he starts in the minor leagues.

"When it was fairly evident we were going to be picking toward the top of the draft ... Carlos was our main target," Hahn said. We feel he fits best with our plan to turn things around and get this thing on track quickly.

"We view him as a premium front-end starter with the ability to help us in Chicago at some point in the not-too-distant future."

He was thought to be one of the most major-league ready pitchers in the draft, and Hahn said there is a possibility he could join the Sox bullpen this season or the rotation in 2015.

"(I think) that he is on one of those faster development paths than your traditional draftee based on his ability," Hahn said. "But until he's working with us on a regular basis and we know exactly where he is it's simply premature to speculate on his role at the end of the '14 season or much less in the '15 season."

Rodon was 6-7 with a 2.01 ERA, three complete games, 117 strikeouts and a .229 opponents average against in 14 starts with N.C. State this season. In his three-year career, he was 25-10 with a 2.24 ERA.

The Sox will introduce Rodon to the media next Friday at U.S. Cellular Field.
