Sacramento man arrested, another sought in assault near San Francisco’s AT&T Park

A Sacramento man is in custody and another is sought in connection with an assault Thursday near San Francisco’s AT&T Park.

Officer Albie Esparza, a spokesman for the San Francisco Police Department, said the incident occurred about 5:50 p.m., about two hours after a game between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A’s ended, but was not related to the game or the rivalry between the teams.

He said an argument occurred between two groups, and two people were allegedly assaulted by the two men. One suspect, identified as 31-year-old Francisco Lopez of Sacramento, was arrested by Sacramento police in the 1000 block of Glenrose Avenue in North Sacramento late Thursday. He was booked into jail in San Francisco about noon Friday. Esparza said police have identified a second suspect, also believed to be from Sacramento, but they have not released his name.

Esparza said the assault followed an argument. Lopez reportedly punched a 28-year-old San Jose man, and a 27-year-old woman from Oakland, who tried to break up the fight, was allegedly punched by the second suspect. The woman fell to the ground and was knocked unconscious.

Esparza said the woman was taken to a hospital and has been released. He said she suffered scrapes and bruises. The San Jose man suffered injuries to his mouth and teeth.

Lopez and his companion reportedly fled in a vehicle. Police were able to obtain a description and license plate number of the vehicle, and traced it to Sacramento. Sacramento police subsequently were contacted and made the arrest.

Esparza said police know the motive for the fight, but they are not releasing that information. He said the victims and suspects had no previous relationship, and the incident was not gang-related.

Lopez was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy. He said the second suspect faces the same charges.
