Re "Nonprofit board makes sense for streetcar line" (Forum, July 6): While it is exciting to consider the possibility of a streetcar line between Sacramento and West Sacramento, it's equally important to meet the needs of all bridge users.
Several years ago, a Caltrans project added striped shoulders to the bridge, a significant improvement for bicyclists traveling to and from downtown Sacramento. The shoulders on the bridge are much better for bikes than the walkways on the bridge, which are often busy with pedestrians, especially when there are events on either or both sides of the of the river. Providing space on the roadway for bicycling and allowing pedestrians full use of the walkways improves safety and convenience for both groups.
Sacramento and West Sacramento officials need to consider and provide for all bridge users, including bicyclists, when planning the streetcar project.
