Susan Peters and full disclosure

Re "Critics question supervisor's votes on area where she owns land" (Our Region, July 12): In 2012, I ran for a seat on the Fulton El Camino Park District board in order to serve my community. Living within the district was required. However, if I had owned a business, or had a financial interest in the district, the law says I would have to declare it, and if elected, vote in adherence to that declaration.

The following is the requirement every candidate must agree and swear to: Government Code 7200-01 requires that every candidate for election to a city office file a statement of economic interests disclosing his or her financial interests.

The exception to this filing would be if the candidate has filed, within 60 days prior to the filing of his or her declaration of candidacy, a statement for the same jurisdiction.

It is an honor to serve your community. It is not for considering ways to line your pocket.
