UPDATE: Sacramento fire crews trace odor to leaking refrigerant at Fruitridge Road bakery

Published: Monday, Jul. 14, 2014 - 6:16 pm

A Sacramento Fire Department hazardous materials team discovered a refrigerant leak Monday at a building housing a bakery in the 8800 block of Fruitridge Road, forcing a traffic closure in the area.

Roberto Padilla, fire department spokesman, said someone at a neighboring business reported a peculiar odor in the area about 3 p.m. An engine company that responded also detected the odor and summoned the hazardous materials team.

Padilla said it was determined that the odor was caused by leaking refrigerant. A refrigerant technician familiar with the equipment assisted the hazardous materials team in shutting off the leaks, and the property was turned back to the business owner about 5 p.m.

Padilla said nearby buildings were either closed or vacant and no evacuations were required. No injuries were reported and no residences were affected.

Padilla said 88th Street was closed to traffic at Fruitridge Road during the incident.
