Nice try, former governors

Re "Energy strategy must balance environment and economy" (Forum, July 13): Three former California governors have proposed a reasonable framework to view energy, the environment and the economy. In an era of extremist views and vitriolic hyperbole, this is to be commended. The article assumes there will still be a significant role for fossil fuels in our future economy.

However, most scientists believe we must see a temperature increase of no more than two degrees centigrade from pre-industrial levels, if we are to avoid major climate disruptions. This will require a significantly diminished role for fossil fuels in the coming decades. A respected economic forecasting company, REMI, Inc., has recently issued a report showing that a revenue neutral carbon tax can achieve a great reduction in fossil fuel reliance while still facilitating strong economic growth.

Despite the governors' vision, a different fossil fuel future awaits us.
