Franklin Field airport reopens after grass fire

Published: Tuesday, Jul. 15, 2014 - 3:24 pm

The Franklin Field airport in Elk Grove reopened Tuesday afternoon after firefighters extinguished a 120-acre grass fire nearby, according to the Cosumnes fire department’s Twitter.

Smoke prompted officials to stop air traffic and Bruceville Road was closed temporarily Tuesday morning, said Chief Tracey Hansen of the Cosumnes Fire Department. The airport is in the 1100 block of Bruceville Road.

No structures were damaged by the fire. The blaze has been ruled accidental, but officials are unable to rule out electrical issues, she said.

“(The fire was) out in the middle of the field near some power poles,” Hansen said.

Firefighters battled winds blowing 10-15 miles per hour and drought conditions, she said.

“There’s very dry grass in the field so it burns very quickly,” Hansen said.
