Opinion extra! Finally, an international celebrity stands up for migrant kids -- the Pope

Finally, an international celebrity has taken a stand on the crisis of the thousands of unaccompanied migrant children detained by immigration after crossing the U.S. border. Of course, it was the man who has become a sort of moral compass for the world on social issues – Pope Francis.

In a letter to the Mexico/Holy See Colloquium on Migration and Development, El Papa urged “the international community to pay attention to this challenge” and to provide protection for the some 50,000 kids from Mexico and Central America.

Right on. This is what The Bee’s editorial board said more than a month ago when the scope of the crisis became clear.

In our editorial on June 8, we asked: “Where are the international aid groups, such as World Vision and Amnesty International? Where is the United Nations? Where are Angelina Jolie and other celebrities who advocate for endangered children worldwide?”

Nearly six weeks later, we’re still asking. Along with the pope.
