Re Dean Cortopassi ad, July 10: I was pleased to see the full-page ad placed in your paper by Dean Cortopassi. I can only imagine how much of his own money he used to pay for it.
In the ad, Cortopassi explains in detail, how the California legislature lies to its constituents about our state budget. Although they claim that we've finally balanced the budget, this is untrue. The legislature chooses to use dishonest accounting principles to conceal the fact that the budget is actually at a $6 billion deficit. I would argue that the deficit is actually close to the $100 billion mark based on unpaid liabilities to state employee pensions.
The legislature regularly conceals the truth, and the press doesn't seem motivated at all to seek and report the truth. We have to rely on patriotic citizens such as Cortopassi to spend his own money to inform us.
