Are healthy neighborhoods disposable now?

Re "Is Sacramento's housing market ready to grow up?" (Page A1, July 13): As a downtown high-rise resident since 1989, I heartily endorse the lifestyle and believe more people could be enjoying high-rise living in downtown. The Bee did an excellent job of detailing the challenges in planning new high-rise residential development.

The risks and rewards are higher with high-rise. I do not support the risky destruction of historic, healthy neighborhoods, tree canopy and lower cost housing in the name of more housing downtown as proposed by Kennedy-Wilson as Sacramento Commons. There could be room for more high-rise housing at Capitol Towers and Villas.

However, the proposal by Kennedy-Wilson completely disrespects the current neighborhood created over 50 years ago. Capitol Towers and Villas is a successful neighborhood created by the city redevelopment agency and should not be treated as disposable by the city Planning Commission and Council now.
