Kings involved in Josh Smith trade talks again

Published: Thursday, Jul. 17, 2014 - 2:07 pm

As first reported by ESPN, the Kings are again having discussions about a deal that would bring forward Josh Smith to Sacramento from Detroit.

The reaction to the talks from various league sources ranges from intrigue to outright confusion as to why the Kings would take on Smith and the remaining $40.5 million on on his contract for the next three years.

Smith (6-9, 225) averaged 16.4 points (41.9 percent shooting), 6.8 rebounds and 1.43 blocks last season, his first with Detroit.

Smith is the kind athletic power forward the Kings are looking for, but it’s if Smith is the player they should make a move to land. It certainly would be a headline-grabbing move, which the Kings would like as they rebrand themselves.

The Kings would like to move the contracts of Jason Terry and Jason Thompson, especially if they could land a talent like Smith.

But considering the talent of Smith, it will likely take more to acquire Smith. But after a disappointing first season with the Pistons, new management might want dump Smith for the sake of chemistry.

Even if a deal could be worked out, it’s unclear how the Kings would blend DeMarcus Cousins, Rudy Gay and Smith on the frontline.

The Kings have said moving the ball and playing at a faster pace are priorities, and Smith has always been a scorer.

How that trio would mesh would be something to watch.
