Two women were killed and a third was injured in a single-vehicle crash Thursday on Interstate 80 in Auburn.

The crash occurred about noon as a beige 2006 Nissan Altima was westbound in the fast lane on Interstate 80, west of Nevada Street. The driver for some reason lost control of the vehicle, causing it to swerve across all westbound traffic lanes, said Officer David Martinez of the California Highway Patrol. He said the vehicle traveled onto the shoulder, striking an embankment and light pole. It then overturned and came to rest on its wheels in the No. 3 and 4 traffic lanes.

Martinez said the driver and left rear passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names have not been released pending notification of family.

A passenger in the front seat, identified by the CHP as 24-year-old Robinisha Briggsof Sacramento, was transported to Sutter Roseville Medical Center with minor injuries.

Martinez said the crash is under investigation. He said it appears all three occupants were wearing their seat belts.
