Reasons for gay HIV statistics?

Re "HIV cases in U.S. fall, but not for young, gay men" (Page A7, July 20): I got interested in Nicole Ostrow's article and read the whole thing. I have to say that I was a little disappointed by the article itself because Ostrow made it seem like there is a cause and effect relationship between being gay and having HIV, even though that probably wasn't her intent.

It would have been nice to point out some specific reasons why the rate of HIV in gay men has either stayed the same or gone up. One example was a study by the Northwestern University that said that young, gay men were eight times more likely to have unprotected sex when they're in a so-called serious relationship than during a casual sexual encounter. -- Tejas Sood, Folsom
