Re "Death toll spikes as invasion grows, (Page A1, July 21): This article, as do nearly all of the articles related to the conflict between Gaza and Israel, leans toward eliciting sympathy for the Palestinians and their losses of life and infrastructure. All unnecessary loss is to be decried. However, the declared aim of a Palestinian attack is to annihilate Israel.

Is it not reasonable for Israel to defend itself and its people by trying to destroy the tunnels and dissuade Hamas from continuing the barrage? Where is the outrage for the continued shelling of civilian Israeli targets? Israel would stop if Hamas did.
