West Bromwich Albion FC 1, Republic FC 0

Highlights: In every way but on the scoreboard, Republic FC outplayed the Baggies from the English Premier League in the friendly. Republic FC outshot West Brom 21-11 and had nine corners to the Baggies’ two. Republic FC also played a man up for the last 10 minutes after Baggies midfielder Craig Gardner was ejected for receiving his second yellow card. But Graham Dorrans’ penalty kick in the 13th minute held up. Dorrans scored after Republic FC’s Nemanja Vukovic was called for fouling Victor Anichebe in the box.

Player of the match: West Brom goalkeeper Boaz Myhill, who was born in Modesto but grew up in Wales, had trouble picking up a Max Alvarez shot but toe-poked it away at the last minute to prevent the tying goal in the first half. He finished with nine saves.

Quote: “We made one or two mistakes in the first half and got punished for it,” Republic FC coach Preki said. “I thought we could have had two goals ourself. But you could tell they are a quality team, and if you make mistakes, they’ll punish you for it. But I’ve got to give my guys a lot of credit.”

Sellout streak ends: Republic FC drew an announced crowd of 7,461, its first non-sellout in seven Bonney Field matches.

Next: Republic FC plays West Brom again at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Bonney Field.
