Two arrested in killing of Fair Oaks man

Published: Tuesday, Jul. 22, 2014 - 6:53 am

Two Sacramento men have been arrested in connection with the death of a Fair Oaks man last weekend.

Sacramento County sheriff’s homicide detectives arrested Deonte Lindel Upchurch, 25, and Matthew Brownwood, 31, Monday afternoon and booked them into jail on suspicion of murder and robbery.

They are suspected of shooting Wesley John Camp, 34, inside his home in the 7400 block of Tierra Way. Upchurch and Brownwood were invited into the home following a small gathering and then attempted to take items that did not belong to them, said sheriff’s Sgt. Lisa Bowman.

Detectives believe that Camp confronted Upchurch and Brownwood and was shot during an altercation. Authorities did not specify what items were the object of the alleged theft.

Camp, who was shot in his upper torso, was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel at 9:50 p.m. Sunday. Occupants of the home declined to talk to The Sacramento Bee on Monday.

Both suspects have had previous troubles with the law. In March, Upchurch pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of manufacturing or possessing brass knuckles, according to Sacramento Superior Court records available online. He has previous convictions for misdemeanor domestic violence, court records show.

In September, Brownwood pleaded no contest to misdemeanor driving under the influence and driving with a license suspended for DUI. In cases spanning 2008 to 2010, he was convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence, DUI and driving without a license and felony attempted grand theft.
