Obama cancels Kimmel show appearance amid world crises

President Barack Obama, who is being criticized for a three-day trip to the west coast in the midst of several international crises, did make at least one alteration to his schedule:

He will not appear on Jimmy Kimmel’s late night comedy show Wednesday.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest did not characterize the decision as a cancellation, but confirmed that the White House had been in touch with Kimmel’s show about a possible appearance.

“We ultimately elected not to have the president do that interview over the course of this trip, and that is at least in part related to the challenges of doing a comedy show in the midst of some of these other, more serious matters that the president's dealing with in the international scene,” Earnest said.

The trip to Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles, which includes five fundraisers, comes days after Obama was criticized for not scrapping a trip to Delaware and New York in the wake of the downing of a passenger jet over Ukraine.

Earnest again defended Obama’s travel on Tuesday.

“I think what was demonstrated (last week)...that even in midst of some urgent international matters, the president was able to attend to American interests around the globe, while conducting the political functions that go along with the job,” he said. “We anticipate that will be the case this week. That's why there have been no changes to the schedule announced thus far.”
