Sacramento man convicted of possessing rock cocaine for sale

A federal jury has convicted a Sacramento man of possessing cocaine for sale.

Following a three-day trial before U.S. District Judge Morrison C. England Jr., John Winton Harris, 31, was found guilty Wednesday of one count of possession of at least 29 grams of cocaine base, commonly referred to as crack or rock cocaine, according to a federal Department of Justice news release.

According to evidence presented during the trial, Sacramento police officers responded to a domestic violence complaint at an apartment complex. When they entered the apartment, they found Harris crouched in the kitchen area.

Harris was moved to another location in the apartment, and when officers found a large amount of cocaine base where he had been crouching in the kitchen, Harris attempted to flee, authorities said. Harris claimed he did not live in the apartment, but officers found mail addressed to him at that address, as well as personal items belonging to him in the unit.

Authorities said Harris’ cellphone revealed photographs of him in the same apartment with a large amount of currency only days earlier, as well as text messages indicating he was involved in the distributing cocaine base that same week.

Harris is to be sentenced Oct. 23 by Judge England. He remains in custody pending sentencing.

The case resulted from an investigation by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration and the Sacramento Police Department.
