Cooler taped to rail car near McClellan Airport detonated; no explosives inside

Published: Thursday, Jul. 31, 2014 - 1:50 pm

A suspicious water cooler found taped to the back of a railway car near McClellan Airport this morning was detonated and made safe around 1 p.m. allowing roads in the area to be reopened.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Explosive Ordnance Detail was called to the scene at around 9 a.m. to x-ray the water cooler before removing it from the railway car. The cooler was positioned into the middle of the street where it was detonated, said Sacramento County sheriff’s Sgt. Jeff Hattersley.

The department is still investigating the contents of the water cooler, though there was no explosion when it was detonated, Hattersley said.

The car that the cooler was taped to contained natural gas and the cooler was thought to be suspicious because none of the railway workers knew how it appeared there, Hattersley said.
