AM Sacramento: What you need to know for Saturday

Published: Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014 - 6:00 am

Good Morning! Here’s what you need to know today.

Weather: Sacramento’s 107-degree temperature missed a record high for the date Friday. Today will be more of the same with the high temp hovering around 100 degrees before a slight cool down starts to kick in Sunday.

Spike in hash oil cases: Explosions, fires and hospitalizations stemming from homemade hash oil operations have led to a spike in prosecutions of hash oil manufactures in Sacramento County. Hash oil is the highly concentrated form of THC, the psychoactive substance in marijuana. Butane, which is used to create hash oil, is a cheap but highly volatile liquid that can be ignited by anything from static on nylon shorts to a pilot light.

Changes at St. Hope: St. Hope Public Schools has named Michelle Rhee, the controversial former Washington, D.C., schools chief and charter schools advocate, as its new board chairwoman and removed Jim Scheible as its superintendent. St. Hope leaders plan to launch a national search for Scheible’s replacement and have tapped Rhee protégé Enoch Woodhouse as interim leader.

New lows at Folsom Lake: The California drought has compressed the boating season at Folsom Lake, hurt concessionaires and forced some to look elsewhere for recreation. While boats are all parked ashore, the marina – and the lake – remain open without restrictions. But, when the lake water level drops to 400 feet elevation, officials are expected to implement a 5 mph speed limit.

BBQ comes to Midtown: Rodney Ray, the pitmaster and entrepreneur who opened the thriving T&R Taste of Texas Barbeque in Oak Park on a gamble and a dream three years ago, is taking another leap. Ray’s new restaurant, Sticky Fingers, scheduled to open the first week of September, will occupy the former site of Rick’s Dessert Diner at 2322 K St. in midtown Sacramento. The 27-year-old dessert restaurant reopened Friday in a larger space at 2401 J St.

Hispanic Chamber CEO: The Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce announced Friday that its director of events and marketing, Cathy Rodriguez, has been named president and chief executive officer of the organization.

Local sports: Kansas City at Oakland A’s, 1:05 p.m. (CSNCA, KAHI 950, KHTK 1140)

S.F. Giants at N.Y. Mets, 4:10 p.m. (CSNBA, KNBR 680)
