Death penalty is a deterrent

Re "Defense lawyer leads death penalty to abyss" (Dan Morain, July 27): I am so tired of people saying the death penalty is unjust. If one of your loved ones was saved because the criminal had second thoughts about being executed, how would you feel then? I know of a case that this is what happened. The criminal was planning to shoot a highway patrolman, but then thought "I don't want to go to the gas chamber," so he didn't kill the officer.

Hmm, does that qualify as a deterrent? I am certain that the loved ones of that officer are grateful that, at that time, California had a death penalty and we didn't treat this criminals as guests in our prison system for the rest of their lives at our expense.

Come on, Michael Laurence. Let's see how you would feel if it were your loved one.
