Re "Gaza government must go" (Letters, August 5): Richard Meyer says Israel and the U.S. must destroy the government of Gaza. Then what?
Before the American Revolution, Jonathan Swift wrote "All government without the consent of the governed is the very definition of slavery." Palestine does not consent to be governed by Israel. Israel has the power to keep every Palestinian in prison for life and to kill thousands, but it does not have the power to win an election among Palestinians.
Israeli General Moshe Dayan wrote, "If you want to make peace, you don't talk to your friends. You talk to your enemies." Israel should be a mensch and talk with Hamas.
