Middle East: Reality check on letter

Re "A reality check on Israel" (Letters, Aug. 5): Mohammad Arshad is the one who needs a reality check. Here are a couple of points to consider:

1. You say 1.8 million people are prisoners? That is a ridiculous statement. The Gaza folks are free to leave anytime they choose. Just jump in a boat and cast off.

2. Land is never truly owned. We are all only tenants. You retain your tenancy only if you can defend the land you occupy. If you cannot defend your occupied land, it is very likely that you will lose it to a government or group of people who decide they want what you have.

3. If war is hell, then don't start one.

4. Comparing it to the U.S. occupying Mexico or Canada us a dumb analogy. Arshad never did answer the question, "What would you do if someone fired rockets at you?" My guess is that he would run like the wind.
