A study commissioned by a group representing California nonprofit groups says the organizations employ 1 million people and generate $260 billion in economic activity annually.

The report, entitled “Causes Count: The Economic Power of California’s Nonprofit Sector,” was commissioned by the San Francisco-based California Association of Nonprofits, a statewide alliance of more than 10,000 organizations.

Other key findings from the report: California nonprofits generate $208 billion in annual revenue, rank as the state’s fourth-largest industry based on employment and receive nearly $2 billion in grants annually from California foundations.

Officials said the research was done by the Caster Center for Nonprofit and Philanthropic Research at the University of San Diego, with input from an advisory panel of more 30 nonprofit leaders throughout California.
