• The Spurs continue to make news for all the right reasons. On Tuesday, they announced that Becky Hammon will become the NBAs first female full-time assistant coach when she retires from her 16-year WNBA career at the end of this season. Hammon, who has played eight seasons for the San Antonio Stars, attended Spurs practices and film sessions last season and sat behind the bench at home games when a torn ACL kept her from playing, so she knows the system used by coach Gregg Popovich, who praised her basketball IQ.
• The As finally are receiving national recognition befitting the team with the best record in baseball and that means fans will be able to watch more of their games during the pennant race. As As fans know, most day games during the week arent on TV. But after ESPN decided to feature the As on Sunday Night Baseball on Aug. 17 and Aug. 24, Comcast Sports Net California announced Wednesday the addition of weekday games against the Seattle Mariners on Sept. 3 and the Texas Rangers on Sept. 18. Only one of the As final 49 games isnt scheduled for TV, Sept. 11 against the Chicago White Sox.
• Speaking of the As, the addition of ace Jon Lester clearly was aimed at beating the Detroit Tigers in the American League Championship Series. But is he really worth giving up Yoenis Cespedes? The As will need someone to step up offensively against the Tigers, who matched the As by landing David Price. In his debut with the Tigers on Tuesday, Price struck out 10 Yankees, the 10th time this season hes struck out 10 or more. The Tigers (Price, Max Scherzer, Anibal Sanchez, Justin Verlander) and As (Lester, Sonny Gray, Scott Kazmir, Jeff Samardzija) now have arguably baseballs best rotations.
