Big Idea Theatre presents Julia Chos bittersweet The Language Archive.
As I wrote after seeing it at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2011, Alternately ebullient and sad, Chos play digs deeply into both love and loss.
The melancholy drama is a smart, emotional meditation on love and the limits of language to communicate it. While language researcher George (Eason Donner) and his wife, Mary (Jessica Berkey), have a disintegrating marriage, his lab assistant, Emma (Elizabeth Holzman), has a desperate infatuation with him.
Her poignant journey becomes the center of the play. Benjamin Ismail directs. At Big Idea Theatre, 1616 Del Paso Blvd., Sacramento, through Aug. 23. Tickets: $10-$20. Information at (916) 960-3036 or www.bigideatheatre.com.
