Fish tacos with trimmings is a lunchtime go-to

We happened to be cruising around the Fountains shopping center in Roseville the other day when lunchtime hunger struck.

Let’s see, the choices included Boudin SF, California Pizza Kitchen, Jack’s Urban Eats, Noodles & Company....

“What about Zocalo?” someone suggested.

Sure, we could do Mexican fare, so we went inside and grabbed a table. Like its sister restaurant in Midtown Sacramento, this Zocalo is a handsome space with many interesting touches.

After lunch, we agreed its version of Baja-style fish tacos is one of the best we’ve had in the area. The three mini-flour tortillas overflow with crispy beer-battered fish topped with shredded cabbage, salsa and chipotle aioli. With them are a heap of flavorful cilantro-infused rice and a bowl of savory black beans topped with crumbles of queso fresco. Oh, and guacamole and chips, too. A big meal for $12.50, easily shared.

The two restaurants are at 1182 Roseville Parkway, Roseville (916-788-0303), and 1801 Capitol Ave., Sacramento (916-441-0303).
