Tye “Glenn” Champ, a former gubernatorial candidate best known for his status as a registered sex offender, was arrested Friday in connection with the shooting of a neighbor and a horse, The Fresno Bee reported.

Champ, who described himself during the campaign as a “new breed of Christian soldier moving forward in the army of the Lord,” received 76,066 votes, about 2 percent of all votes cast, in the June primary election.

According to The Fresno Bee:

Tye "Glenn" Champ, 48, was taken into custody around midday Friday near Goshen without incident. A Tulare County sheriff's deputy caught up to him on a traffic stop.

Champ previously served a prison term for manslaughter, has several convictions for weapons offenses and is also a registered sex offender.

The victim underwent surgery at Community Regional Medial Center for a stomach wound; his condition was not released. The horse died at the shooting scene on Lynx Lane below Prather.

A Fresno County sheriff's spokesman said it is believed the shooting came as a result of a dispute between neighbors over work being done on a private road. A witness said Champ pulled out a small black handgun and shot the 40-year-old victim then fired several more times as the man and his young son, who had been standing nearby, ran away, missing them but killing a horse that was in a pasture.
