AM Sacramento: What you need to know for Monday

Published: Monday, Aug. 11, 2014 - 6:13 am

Good morning. Here’s what you need to know today:

Life in the 80s: Another week without a 100-degree day is forecast for Sacramento as the area enjoys some mild August weather. The last 100-degree day was Aug. 1 when the city broiled under 107 degrees. This week the afternoon maximums are expected to be in the high-80s. In the short-term, the National Weather Service says there is a slight chance of some thunder tonight in Sacramento.

Wedding bell blues: Nevada County is considering an ordinance that would limit and require permits for most outdoor events - including weddings, parties and concerts, which have become popular in recent years at scenic locales in the rural county. Officials say regulation is required because of a growing number of complaints of trash, noise and traffic from weddings and concerts in residential neighborhoods. But business leaders object, noting that weddings attract tourists and dollars to the local economy. Before mailing the invitations, read about the proposal here.

Ballot battle over growth: Voters in El Dorado County will decide in November on three separate initiatives related to development. Measure M and Measure O seek to protect rural lifestyles, prevent Highway 50 gridlock and ban traffic-inducing residential subdivisions. Measure N would allow developer traffic fees to serve as matching funds to improve Highway 50, which could in turn clear the way for commercial development. All three measures are opposed by housing developers and other interests that are counting on continued residential growth. To understand the competing measures, go here.

Mather Airport plan: Sacramento County supervisors will decide on a master plan for $107 million in improvements that would bring Mather Airport up to current standards for cargo and general aviation. Official say the upgrades would spur economic activity and would help keep smaller and slower airplanes at Mather and away from Sacramento International Airport. Critics question the plan, noting that demand for air shipping at Mather has fallen below initial projections, and complain about noise from cargo planes flying over neighborhoods along the Highway 50 corridor. Read about the controversy here.

Local sports: Oakland A’s at Kansas City, 5:10 p.m. (CSNCA, KHTK 1140, KAHI 950)

Sacramento River Cats at Reno Aces, 7:05 p.m. (KSTE 650)
