River Cats glance: Cats stretch their division lead with 3-1 win

Published: Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014 - 10:50 pm

• Highlight: Alden Carrithers homered and Phillip Humber picked up his fifth win as the River Cats extended their division lead to four games with a 3-1 victory over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Tuesday night at Raley Field as the Reno Aces lost.

• Buss-ting loose: Since June 26, River Cats outfielder Nick Buss has put together two six-game hitting streaks, a 10-game hitting streak and is currently on a team-high 18-game hitting streak. He has raised his batting average from .269 to .296 and has 15 multi-hit performances.

• New face: The River Cats started right-handed pitcher Angel Castro, acquired by the A’s from St. Louis for cash considerations. He was 9-6 with a 4.01 ERA at Memphis. He threw four innings Tuesday and allowed one unearned run.

• Local flavor: The Sky Sox have outfielder Tim Wheeler, formerly of El Camino High and Sacramento State, and reliever Josh Roenicke, formerly of Nevada Union High.

• What’s ahead: The River Cats have 20 games left in the regular season. They have eight on the road – four each against Memphis and Nashville. They have 12 games at home – three more with Colorado Springs, four with Oklahoma City and five to finish the season against Reno.

• Today: River Cats RHP Zach Neal (5-6, 4.81 ERA) vs. Colorado Springs LHP Brian Burres (1-6, 7.14), 7:05 p.m., Raley Field.
