9 p.m. Saturday
North Columbia Schoolhouse (Ridgestock Expo)
San Franciscos Monophonics have a smoking cover of Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) on their newest record, preceded by a tune simply called Sure is Funky. That oughta tell you all you need to know about this steadily ascending collective, which does it the way James Brown did it: heavy, funky, sweaty and with nothing left behind. The band headlines a full day of music, food, beer and sustainability demos at the Ridgestock Expo, with Boca do Rio, Clan Dyken and more performing. 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. 17894 Tyler Foote Crossing Road, Nevada City. $30. www.ridgestock.org.
Smooth Hound Smith
3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday
Berryessa Brewing Co.
Feelin a little blue about that news last week that the Civil Wars broke up. The effervescent duo of Zack Smith and Caitlin Doyle (a.k.a. Smooth Hound Smith) might help take the edge off and theyll make you realize where the Wars could have gone with a little more guts and a smidge more booze. SHS will swirl through breezily sweet sunny afternoon folk, on their way to gritting it up with plank-banging junky and grimy blues rock. And it being an afternoon show at Berryessa, some dank IPA will go well with some dank blues. 27260 Hwy 128, Winters. www.berryessabrewingco.com.
7:30 p.m. Saturday
In the same way that Bruno Mars is a modern amalgamation of soul singers past, its easy to look at fireballer Frankie Moreno as a similar refresh of Vegas theater madmen of years past. Backed by a robust band, he has the fiery yield of classic piano-pounding, hip-shaking showman, sporting the kind of moves that made Elvis fans scramble to church to repent, and the lounge-crooner persona you might see from a Michael Bublé that is, if someone switched his decaf to espresso without telling him. 6:30 p.m. doors. 1013 K St., Sacramento. $24.50-$35. www.thecrest.com.
Looking ahead: Interpol. Sept. 19 at Ace of Spades
A few years ago, they seemed to have the rock world by the throat. After a three-year hiatus and a little lineup shaking, theyre back for more with a new record, El Pintor. 1417 R St., Sacramento. $28. www.aceofspadessac.com.
