Folsom police say a man who fatally stabbed his infant cousin and seriously injured his aunt last week arrived at the victims’ apartment armed with two knives.

Jose Reyes Torres, 20, of Folsom was shot by police after he emerged from the apartment, covered in blood, and advanced on an officer. Police said he continued to fight officers after being taken into custody. He died en route to a hospital.

Police on Wednesday released additional details on the incident, which began about 2:30 p.m. Aug. 7 when officers responded to the residence in the 300 block of Montrose Drive regarding a report of a stabbing.

They said investigators have learned that Reyes Torres had gone to the residence armed with two knives and began violently attacking family members within minutes after he arrived. He reportedly used one of the knives to repeatedly stab his aunt, then pushed past another family member before stabbing 6-month-old Roberto Varela.

Police said Reyes was armed with another knife and was searching for other family members when he confronted a Folsom officer outside the residence. Reyes Torres charged the officer, and despite orders to stop, he continued running at the officer and yelling profanity. Police said the officer fired once, striking Reyes Torres.

Police said the motive for the attacks on the family remains unclear.

Reyes Torres’ aunt, the infant’s mother, underwent surgery and is in stable condition at a local hospital, according to the Police Department news release. Police have not released her name, but the coroner’s website identified her as Arela Aguilar. Other public records list her first name as Areli. The website lists the baby’s father as Chesar Varela.

Police said the baby’s family has requested privacy, but released a photo of Roberto Varela. A memorial fund in the name of Roberto David Varela has been set up at Folsom Lake Bank, 905 Sutter St., No. 100, in Folsom.
