Published: Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014 - 10:03 pm

A 35-year-old woman taken into custody after showing signs of intoxication died Thursday afternoon while being taken in a Sacramento County sheriff’s patrol vehicle.

The Sheriff’s Department received a call about 2:40 p.m. from a concerned citizen who reported a woman acting erratically near the 400 block of K Street in Rio Linda. When deputies arrived, they found the woman and took her into custody on suspicion of public intoxication. Once she was medically cleared by the fire department, she was placed under arrest, according to a Sheriff’s Department news release.

While en route to a nearby jail transport van, the deputy noticed that the woman had become unresponsive in the back seat of the patrol vehicle and immediately pulled over, sheriff’s officials said. The deputy began life-saving efforts, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene by fire personnel

The woman’s name has not been released pending notification of family. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the official cause of death.
