A San Jose man has been identified as the person killed in a plane crash over the weekend in El Dorado County.

Perry Nieland, 52, died at the scene of the crash near the rural community of Swansboro about 7 p.m. Saturday. His brother, Richard Nieland, 55, also of San Jose, was injured in the crash northeast of Placerville.

Richard Neiland was airlifted to Sutter Roseville Medical Center. It is not known who was piloting the plane, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.

The aircraft was headed for the Swansboro Airport and intended on landing there, according to the sheriff's office. After circling the airport one time, the aircraft disappeared from sight.

Report of the crash was made to the sheriff's dispatch center just before 7 p.m. by someone at Yankee John Court.

The cause of the crash is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board, which is leading the investigation, said Allen Kenitzer, FAA spokesman.
