With the Labor Day holiday weekend just up the road, Sacramento-area motorists continue to get a welcome break at local gas pumps.

National price tracker GasBuddy.com, which surveys more than 700 regional gas outlets daily, said the average retail price of gas in Sacramento region fell another 3.4 cents over the past week to $3.79 a gallon.

That’s the sixth consecutive week that prices have fallen.

The current price is 16.3 cents lower than one month ago but still nearly 9 cents higher than this time last year.

Nationally, the average price of gas fell 2 cents over the past week to $3.45 a gallon, down about 13 cents from a month ago and 8.5 cents lower than the year-ago level.

Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst with GasBuddy, said in a statement that “we’re nearing the point that gasoline demand drops – after Labor Day...The upcoming switch back to cheaper winter gasoline will also put downward pressure on prices in mid-September.”
