Re "Davis Police Department's armored truck drives a wedge between community and police" (Editorial, Aug. 21): Don't forget this administration is the one who authorized the giving away of military equipment to our cities' police departments. For what real purpose? To enhance their choice of tools to combat violence and criminals? Possibly.

Quite possibly there are ulterior motives, but whatever the reason, it should be obvious to most that we're breeding a society that wants peace and no more war. On the other hand, we are letting convicted criminals out of prison due to overcrowding, supposedly. We pass laws by the thousands every year to combat violence. It appears it doesn't matter.

We are a violent nation, and we have an administration who ignores most laws and enforces the ones they see fit. I don't want to see a militarized police, but if we allow criminals to run free, what other choice do the police have in defending us law-abiding citizens?
